Reading Rythms

As my children grow as readers, I’ve noticed a natural progression through genres and the types of books that they LOVE to read. Many of these books are wonderful for any child to read, but I have found my children embracing different genres and being particularly interested in certain books at various ages!

Here’s the rhythms that my two oldest children have naturally followed:

6 – 7 years:

Animal friends and the creation care years 🐻

When my kiddos started reading they absolutely adored books about animals, or books with animals as main characters. These stories cultivate compassion towards God’s creation, and helped my children find their place as stewards in God’s world.

Billy and Blaze by C. W. Anderson
Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White
Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne
A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond
Brer Rabbit, Little Brown Bear & The Adventures of Pip by Enid Blyton
Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
How Sammy Went to Coral Land by Emily Paret Atwater
Heartwood Hotel by Kallie George
Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik
The Bears on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgiesh
The Siamese Kittens by Michael Haykin

7-8 years:

Family saga & Adventure, making brothers and sisters the best of friends!

These family focused books helped to lay the foundations of family relationships and friendship. My children began to form adventure clubs and revelled in outdoor play.

Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan
The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright
A Lion to Guard Us by Clyde Roberts Bulla
The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace
Baby Island by Carol Ryrie Bruno
Happy Family by Rebecca Caudill
Understood Betsy
Children of the Willow Farm by Enid Blyton
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Beneath the Swirling Sky by Carolyn Leilogou
The Secret of the Hidden Scroll series by M. J. Thomas
The Secret Seven and Famous Five by Enid Blyton
My Side of the Mountain Trilogy by Jean Craighead George
The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford
Storm Boy by Colin Thiele

9-12 years: Fantasy & Historical fiction/Biographies

Fanciful Ideas and imaginative play consumed their free time as they read epic fantasy stories with battles between good and evil. They are also discovering incredible role models in the Christian faith.

Ten Girls/Boys who changed the World Series by Irene Howat
Carved in Ebony by Jasmine L Holmes
Christian Heroes Now and Then by Janet and George Benge
Trial and Triumph by Richard Hannula
Lepunia by Kevin Ford
The Chronicles of Narnia C S Lewis
The Green Ember series by S. D. Smith
The Mistmantle Chronicles by M. I. McAllister
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald
A Place to Hang the Moon and Nothing Else But Miracles by Kate Albus
The Songs of a Warrior by Katy Morgan

Sweep by Jonathan Auxier
The Dreamkeeper Saga by Kathyrn Butler
The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson

Have you noticed any rhythms in your family? Are they the same as my kiddos? I’d love to know!
